The
Electronic Classroom is a real time class written in
Java, also known as the JavaECR
Chat Mode: This is the conventional chat room. With
or without the teacher's presence, every participant can
submit a short message by entering it in the Input (beige)
panel, followed by pressing the submit button. The student
message will be posted to the left (blue) panel. The teacher
(or group leader) has the choice between submitting his/her
message to the right (yellow) panel or to the left (blue)
panel.
ECR Mode: The teacher (or group leader) can switch
to ECR mode, by clicking on the ECR button. In ECR mode,
the teacher controls who can "talk". It is a simulation
of a real class. Students can "raise their hand" by clicking
on the button "Ask Question", then the teacher (or group
leader) can give permission to one of them by clicking on
his/her name. From there on, the messages input by both
the teacher (or group leader) and student in control will
be displayed simultaneously, on the left (blue) panel for
the student, and on the right (yellow) panel for the teacher.
The Electronic Class consists of 4 Sections (from
top to down):
Section A, at the top, lists the teacher or group
leader first, followed by the students. A color code illustrates
the action: when joining the ECR, the teacher becomes yellow,
while the students become blue. If a student has a question,
he/she becomes orange (preceded by a question mark) and
yellow when the teacher gives him/her control of the class.
Students can enter a brief message in the textfield under
their name (known as the polling area), then click on their
name.
Section B, beneath section A, consists of three panels:
1. On the left side, a blue panel, where the messages typed
by the students will be displayed.
2. On the right side, two panels:
a) On the top right, a yellow panel, where the messages
typed by the teacher or the group leader will be displayed.
b) On the right, bottom, a beige panel, where the teacher
and the students will input their message.
Section C, beneath section B, consists of 3 subsections:
a) Attending students are listed on a white panel,
b) A collection of 6 buttons, which differ according
to the mode:
-In Chat mode, the 6 buttons are: Submit left (blue) and
Submit right (yellow), to submit a message typed on the
input (beige) panel to the panel of matching color, Topic,
to enter a new topic, then a button ecr/chat to toggle between
chat mode and ecr mode, Clear left (blue) and Clear right
(yellow) to clear the panel with matching color. -In ECR
mode, there are only 4 buttons: Cut-Paste (yellow) plays
the same role as submit right, and will let you submit a
text previously cut and pasted to the beige panel, ecr/chat
to toggle between chat mode and ecr mode, Clear left (blue)
and Clear right (yellow) to clear the panel with matching
color.
c) 3 menus allow the trainer to:
- i) select a lesson then click on Lesson,
- ii) select a slide then click on Slides. The slide
will be displayed in a separate window, in such a way that
the teacher will be able to conduct a slide show over the
Internet.
- iii) select an assignment then click on Assignments.
The assignment will be displayed in a separate window.
Section D, at the bottom, includes a collection of
slides. These slides play the same role as the individual
books students would bring in a face to face class, where
each student follows the teacher's instructions using his/her
own book (while in the slide show described earlier, everyone
was looking at the slide displayed by the teacher.
